Differences Between Rome and The States

Life in a big foreign city is of course different from what you can find at home back in the states, and going to school in one is a whole different experience from Newport Rhode Island. There is a host of differences good and bad, but I wish to focus on to two differences have noticed in my brief time here.

Meal times have are different here then back home. If you want a big breakfast then you will have to cook it for yourself. The prevailing option seems to be grab a pastry and a coffee from one of the countless bars. Bar is used interchangeably for a place to grab coffee or a beer; someplace will even serve both later in the day. The sheer prevalence of these coffee bars is astounding. They are small and family owned and on every street. You can pick a random direction and start walking and while you might not find a restaurant, grocery store, or anything you will find a coffee bar.

Another big difference to me has been the ease of public transportation. You see if you want to walk to your destination, which is always an option. If you do not want to the bus and train are an excellent intercity choice. They run frequently if no always on time. This leaves you with a wealth of ways to get around. You do not need a car to get around, but you should be careful not to get hit by a Fiat whipping around a corner at high speeds.

It has only been two brief weeks here in Rome, yet it feels like longer. The inner city life leaves you with a wealth of things to explore, and new things to try. So it is a rare moment to be sitting around lampooning the fact that there is nothing to do.
