Oh Barcelona I love you. I’ve only been here for a little over a week and it already feels like home. Of course like any new place there are a few cultural differences I need to get used to, but in all I am enjoying myself full heartedly. I knew coming here that everything is done so much later, however now I truly understand why the midday siesta is so important. It’s not until 15:00 that people are eating lunch and not until 22:00 that people even consider eating dinner. And as the title of this post says, wine is cheaper than water. Which I find to be incredible considering back at home you can have water for free. The architecture here is insane, even in the residential areas of the city. I love my apartment in Gràcia. It is so cute and quaint here. I can sit outside on my balcony and see all that goes on in my little part of the city. My housemates and I haven’t wasted any time to do some of the tourist activities in Barca. In fact, I have been able to walk to Park Güell from my apartment, which has the most beautiful architecture by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí’s influence can be seen throughout the city. Especially at Sagrada Familia, which he was never able to finish due to his untimely death. While walking around the city I was to see the outside of the basílica, but I need to go back to see the inside. Supposedly it looks like the inside of a forest. I have also taken a trip to the top of Montjuïc. Unfortunately it was a foggy day so the view was a bit clouded. But I could definitely see myself going back there. And what is Barcelona without their fútbol! As I’m writing this I can hear cheering and celebration in the street because of the game that Barcelona will be playing against Madrid later today. There are people walking around the city in their Barcelona jerseys. A couple of days ago I went to Camp Nou to see a smaller Barcelona game and the energy in the stadium was intense. I loved it. (And in case you were wondering, yes Barcelona did win) I know I’m spending the whole semester here, but it sometimes doesn’t feel like I will have enough time to see and do everything that the city has to offer. Well I’m off to the beach. Not to swim of course, because it is still too cold for that, but because I haven’t seen it yet and I’m so curious to see what it looks like.
