The Cafés of Cork

For me, one of the joys of living in Newport is the amount of local coffee shops where I can study, grab a quick bite, and meet up with friends; luckily for me Cork, Ireland is no different. In my first month living in Cork, I visited numerous cafés each with their own distinct personality and specialty. Some offer a bustling atmosphere ideal for socialization, while others are more relaxed, providing an excellent environment to read a book on a rainy Irish day or to get some studying done. As a lover of a cozy café and a well-made latte, it’s only right that I write about some of my favorite coffee spots in Cork so far.

Léa’s at the Glucksman

I visited Léa’s the day after I arrived in Cork for my program feeling excited yet uncertain about the semester to come. Léa’s provided a comforting atmosphere on a rainy day in a new city, where I was able to sit down with friends and order some coffee and food for a casual lunch.

The staff were quite friendly and the french toast that I ordered was delicious. Léa’s is on University College Cork’s (UCC) campus and is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily making it a great brunch spot for students looking for a break from classes. Léa’s was a lovely spot for me to unwind after a busy travel day and an excellent introduction to Cork’s café scene.

Bean and Leaf

Bean and Leaf is a Cork staple with locations scattered throughout the county. My friends and I went to the location closest to the city center to sit down for a coffee and chat. Bean and Leaf has two floors with windows looking out onto the city streets and plenty of seating.

My chai latte and pain au chocolat were delicious and they have quite a selection of pastries. Also, my chai latte was delivered in a ceramic mug, and I love a café that uses glassware! Bean and Leaf is beloved by students as an excellent study spot, but it also has a relaxed social atmosphere for those of any age.

The Farmgate Café

The Farmgate Café is a unique and must-visit café in Cork. Located on the second floor of the renowned English Market, The Farmgate Café serves up excellent lunch foods, drinks, and coffees in a cozy and bustling atmosphere.

My friend and I made our way upstairs after exploring the market, looking for a quick meal, and a moment’s rest. Their fish chowder is delicious with hearty chunks of fish and potato throughout, and the food is served piping hot. The staff are attentive and kind, and it was the perfect meal after a walk around the market stalls.

Cuppacity Coffee

Although Cuppacity Coffee is in Cobh, not Cork City, it’s still in County Cork and I loved it so much I had to include it. Their menu includes countless beverages and sandwiches, and there is a patio and seating along the window inside with views of the quaint streets of Cobh.

I ordered a tuna wrap and a caramel latte that were both exceptional, and exactly what I needed to fuel my adventure through Cobh! The clever name and delicious food make this café a must-see stop for the seaside town’s visitors.

Alchemy Coffee

A recent addition to my list of Cork favorites is Alchemy Coffee, a small coffee shop in the city with dark academia décor and vintage books lining the walls. Alchemy gave me the best iced latte I’ve had since arriving in Ireland (high praise from a born-and-raised New Englander) and introduced me to my first sausage roll (an Irish staple) which was fabulous.

They are a no-wifi establishment prioritizing being present with friends and family. On a rare sunny day, their patio seating is the perfect spot to soak up some vitamin D.

Bright Side

Bright Side is open Monday through Friday only and is an excellent spot to grab a coffee to-go, sit in and do some studying, or to gather with friends. Living up to its name, the café has counter seating along a large picture window that lets in gorgeous natural light on bright days. Their lattes are to die for, and they offer several flavor shots to personalize your beverage (my personal favorite is caramel). They also have a case of assorted baked goods and sandwiches that can be heated up to order; so, whether you’re in the mood for a croissant or a chicken pesto bagel, Bright Side has something for everyone.

Cosy Café

Cosy Café is in Kinsale, in the south of Cork County, and offers coffee, sweet treats, and hearty meals. It was the perfect pit-stop for us before heading out into the town for some shopping.

From bagels to fish and chips, the food is delicious and served piping hot, and drinks are served in stunning red ceramics with a tiny biscuit to dip in your coffee. Cosy Café is walking distance from the quaint shops of Kinsale, so after grabbing a bite and a coffee, you’re ready to take on the town.

Beantown Café

Beantown Café is Cork’s Boston inspired café (the logo is the Boston Red Sox ‘B!’), and as a New Englander and a Boston sports fan it was a must visit for me. One of their three locations is along UCC’s campus and on my walk to class, so it’s the perfect spot to drop in and grab a coffee pick-me-up before my last class of the day. They have tons of picnic tables and outdoor seating where students congregate with their friends, and they offer an extensive food and drink menu. Service is quick and staff are friendly! Beantown café is quickly becoming one of my favorite Cork cafés!

Final Thoughts

There is no shortage of coffee shops in the Cork area, and with so many excellent options it’s difficult to go wrong. Whether you’re on the go or looking for an escape from a rainy Ireland day, Cork has it all. Cafés are an excellent introduction to Cork’s community and culture, and they provide a relaxed atmosphere to escape from the city and indulge in your favorite drink and sweet treat. I have many favorites so far, but my Irish café journey is far from over!
