After a week of classes and navigating Madrid’s busy streets, I decided to spend a sunny afternoon at Retiro Park which is my favorite place to go.
I entered through the Puerta de Alcalá side and was immediately struck by how open and calm the space felt. It’s a huge park, but what really stood out was how much was going on—people jogging, reading under trees, hanging out with friends, even a few musicians playing casually in the background. It’s the kind of place where you can do whatever and it just works.
One of the highlights was the lake in the middle of the park, where people were out rowing boats. I didn’t go out on the water this time, but I had done it before and I can say its definitely worth the 6 euros.
Then, I do my favorite thing. I lay out a blanket on the grass where my friends and I have a picnic. Now, I am not one to read, but reading at retiro is my favorite activity. I sit there for hours reading because it is so peaceful. You look around and you see friends gathering around talking, eating, etc.
If you’re in Madrid and need a break from the pace of the city (or just from school), Retiro is a great escape. No big plans needed—just walk around, find a quiet spot, and enjoy the sun.
