This semester, I decided to study abroad at Salzburg College for two main reasons. One: to immerse myself in the German language and learn it better, and two: to explore this part of Europe. As it was my first time outside of the United States, I was unsure what to expect, but my time here so far has gone well. I have already had so many opportunities to explore and see new things, and have had a great time. It is so beautiful in this part of Europe and there are so many things to see!
As soon as the plane descended to land, I was greeted with a great view of the nearby area I would be calling my home for the upcoming semester.
It was pretty foggy on the day that I landed, but in the following days I was able to explore the city and see the surrounding mountains in much more detail. I can see them every morning as I walk to class, and I can see them even better if I go for a hike on one of the nearby hills.

After settling into my homestay room with a great view of the city, I began to explore. I was surprised to see just how traversable Salzburg is without a car! The city is very walkable, and I have a beautiful 15-minute walk to my classes. The public transportation system is very helpful, and I have a card that allows me unlimited local transit; so between walking, busses, and trains, I can get anywhere in Salzburg with speed and ease.

Even though I have only been here for a week, I’ve already had an opportunity to travel! This past weekend, I spent two days in Munich and explored the local museums, many of which cost only €1 on Sundays.
I already have a few more travel locations in mind, and none of them are very far by train. I am very much looking forward to these trips, and I can’t wait to explore further.

Michael B is studying Cultural & Historic Preservation and Sociology & Anthropology, with a Global Studies minor, and is studying abroad at Salzburg College in Austria.
